7 Ways Arthritis May Lead to Cancer

Written by CHANEL G.

Although it may seem that arthritis and cancer are not related, the former is a chronic inflammation of joints and the latter an uncontrolled spread of malignant cells. Research has shown that people living with arthritis, particularly rheumatoid, are more likely to develop certain types of cancer. In addition, the risk of developing cancer is highest in the first few years following diagnosis.

Study results show that people with RA are less likely to get certain types of cancer. However, the prognosis and symptoms for those with RA are often worse.

People with RA have a lower risk of developing cancers in the gastrointestinal, colon, and liver areas. However, these forms of cancer and RA have a significantly higher death rate.

Experts believe the link is due to a combination of genetics, lifestyle, and medication for arthritis. There are some factors that you can control, while others you cannot. We have listed seven possible causes of arthritis that could lead to cancer. While many of these paths can easily be avoided, #6 may require a partner in your health. This is likely to be more difficult.

  1. 1. Medications

This is a great way to get a kick in your teeth! Some medications that are used to treat rheumatoid arthritis can increase your risk of developing cancer. In addition, certain medications used to treat cancer may also cause arthritis. You can treat both of these conditions with a few drugs!

Some of the drugs in question are NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatories), Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF) meds, and corticosteroid injections. In addition, multiple myeloma and lymphoma have been associated with DMARDs (disease-modifying anti-rheumatic medications). This link is still up for debate, but make sure you ask your doctor about any increased cancer risk before taking any new arthritis medication.

  1. Diet

High-fat diets are linked to an unhealthy gut biome. Usually, our digestive system has a mix of good and harmful bacteria. If the bad bacteria are allowed to multiply too often, it can lead to illness. Conversely, a substantial population of beneficial bacteria makes digestion and fuel use easier. Research is now showing that chronically sick gut biome may lead to both arthritis and cancer.

You can achieve a better balance by feeding your good bacteria a variety of prebiotic food. These include garlic, onions, artichokes, and bananas, apples, and other prebiotic foods. These foods contain resistant starch, which is not digested directly by the body but instead feeds good bacteria to allow it to thrive over the harmful stuff.

  1. Lifestyle

Tobacco and alcohol dependence can lead to inflammation and, eventually, cancer. It is well-known that tobacco smoking can lead to cancer. However, it has also been a contributing factor to the development and treatment of arthritis. As long as you continue to smoke, smoking can cause damage to your bones, joints, connective tissue, and other bodily tissues. Smoking can also make medications that are used to treat arthritis less effective.

Regular alcohol consumption increases the risk of developing cancers in the mouth, throat, and stomach. Gout is also more common if you drink alcohol. This is a type of arthritis where crystals form in your joints. One glass per day is a good rule of thumb for women and two per for men.

  1. Immune Response

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition where the body perceives healthy tissue as a threat. As a result, your immune system attacks these tissues in an attempt to heal. If the tissue is truly dangerous, it can be helpful, but it is a matter of mistaken identity when it comes down to RA.

The immune system in rheumatoid arthritis doesn’t just attack the joints but also the heart, eyes, and bones. In addition, the faulty immune response has been linked to skin cancer. However, damaged cells are also susceptible to other types.

  1. Reduction in Activity

You may find it difficult to move when your joints hurt. Your cardiovascular health may be affected if your arthritis pain causes you to miss your workouts. You may also experience weight gain, which puts more strain on your joints and causes more inflammation. This can lead to cancer if you allow your pain to lead to a sedentary lifestyle.

Your joints become stiffest when you sit still for the longest time. To limit the effects of arthritis on your overall health, you must continue moving regularly.

  1. 6.

Another concern is that you may have been misdiagnosed with arthritis. Joint pain can be caused by certain cancers, particularly those found in the bones. This possibility could be overlooked if there are multiple risk factors for developing arthritis. Keep a detailed record of your symptoms to help your doctor correctly diagnose you.

If you believe that your arthritis diagnosis is incorrect, you may need to speak out strongly on behalf of yourself. Many overweight people receive biased care from doctors. Although doctors tend to attribute all bodily issues to weight, they don’t know the full extent of the problem. Although obesity can be a risk factor for many diseases, it is not the cause of all.

  1. Inflammation

People with arthritis are most often affected by inflammation. It is an immune response to try and isolate damaged parts from healthy ones.

While it can be helpful in some situations, such as a localized injury, chronic inflammation can cause damage and become unnecessarily severe. In addition, chronic inflammation can lead to DNA damage over time and even cancer.

Conclusion

It is essential to recognize that arthritis can lead to more severe conditions, although it has no cure. Cancer is a disease that seeks out weakness in the body, particularly cells damaged by chronic inflammation. It then takes root there.

There is always a way to get better. A healthy diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables can make a big difference in your comfort and your digestion.

You can reduce stiffness and pain by staying active and using an ice and heat regimen. While you may eventually need to get a prescription from your doctor to take arthritis medication, natural remedies can be used first.

People with arthritis are at greater risk of dying from cancer. However, if you are willing to change your lifestyle, you don’t need to become a statistic.
